The EPA says that Calculated Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) is a consideration when selecting hearing protection, but that other characteristics which affect the "real world reduction" received and the acceptance by users are just as important. Proper fit is the most critical, because it is on this basis that attenuation data is derived. Improper fit is often a result of attempts to improve comfort. Other factors to consider when selecting an ear plug are durability, hygienic characteristics and cost.* Further, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) lists proper fit as the most important characteristic for effective hearing protection: “Proper fit of a hearing protector is the most important because it is on this basis that attenuation data is derived.” Studies have shown that one half of workers wearing ear plugs receive half or less of the NRR potential because their devices are not worn continuously due to improper or uncomfortable fit. Hearing protection that gives an average of 30 dB NRR, if worn continuously during an 8 hour work day, becomes equal to only 9 dB of protection if taken off for only one hour in the noise environment.
